Ginzburg-Landau vortex dynamics with pinning and strong applied currents

چکیده
We study a mixed heat and Schrödinger Ginzburg-Landau evolution equation on a bounded two-dimensional domain with an electric current applied on the boundary and a pinning potential term. This is meant to model a superconductor subjected to an applied electric current and electromagnetic field and containing impurities. Such a current is expected to set the vortices in motion, while the pinning term drives them toward minima of the pinning potential and “pins” them there. We derive the limiting dynamics of a finite number of vortices in the limit of a large Ginzburg-Landau parameter, or ε → 0, when the intensity of the electric current and applied magnetic field on the boundary scale like |log ε|. We show that the limiting velocity of the vortices is the sum of a Lorentz force, due to the current, and a pinning force. We state an analogous result for a model Ginzburg-Landau equation without magnetic field but with forcing terms. Our proof provides a unified approach to various proofs of dynamics of Ginzburg-Landau vortices. keywords: Ginzburg-Landau, vortices, vortex dynamics, pinning, critical current MSC classification: 35Q99, 35B30, 35B99

Numerical calculation of the vortex–columnar-defect interaction and critical currents in extreme type-II superconductors—a two-dimensional model based on the Ginzburg–Landau approximation
We extend our previous one-dimensional Ginzburg–Landau calculations of the pinning energy of vortices to two dimensions, in order to achieve an understanding of the pinning forces exerted on vortices by defects. By minimizing the free energy using a relaxation scheme, we obtain the spatial variation of the order parameter and supercurrents for a vortex in the vicinity of a cylindrical defect in...
متن کاملStochastic dynamics of Ginzburg-Landau vortices in superconductors
The phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau model for lowtemperature superconductivity has received much attention. However, it is not applicable to physical contexts that do not take into account factors such as material defects or thermal fluctuations. Thus, existing studies of the stability, dynamics, interactions, and other properties of the vortex state do not necessarily carry over to situations...
متن کاملVortex Pinning with Bounded Fields for the Ginzburg–landau Equation
– We investigate vortex pinning in solutions to the Ginzburg–Landau equation. The coefficient, a(x), in the Ginzburg–Landau free energy modeling non-uniform superconductivity is nonnegative and is allowed to vanish at a finite number of points. For a sufficiently large applied magnetic field and for all sufficiently large values of the Ginzburg–Landau parameter κ = 1/ε, we show that minimizers ...
متن کاملThe Vortex Dynamics of a Ginzburg-landau System under Pinning Effect
We study the vortex dynamical behaviour of a Ginzburg-Landau (G-L) system of related to inhomogeneous superconductors as well as to three-dimensional superconducting thin films having variable thickness. It is proved that the vortices are attracted by impurities or inhomogeities in the superconducting materials. This rigorously verifies the fact predicted recently by a few authors using a metho...
متن کاملGinzburg-Landau model with small pinning domains
We consider a Ginzburg-Landau type energy with a piecewise constant pinning term a in the potential (a − |u|). The function a is di erent from 1 only on nitely many disjoint domains, called the pinning domains. These pinning domains model small impurities in a homogeneous superconductor and shrink to single points in the limit ε → 0; here, ε is the inverse of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter. We s...
